Gy\u00f6rgy Sz\u00e9ch\u00e9nyi (1605 \u2013 1695)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Archbishop of Esztergom issued a charter on 29 October 1691 by which he elevated Nov\u00e9 Z\u00e1mky to the status of a town. A duplicate of the charter granting municipal privileges is kept at the town hall. On the Main Square stands his larger-than-life statue. The Franciscan monastery is adorned with a memorial plaque dedicated to Gy\u00f6rgy Sz\u00e9ch\u00e9nyi.<\/p>\n

Gergely Czuczor (1800 \u2013 1866)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Benedictine monk, Hungarian poet and linguist. He was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and was born in the nearby village of Andovce.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

J\u00e1n Majzon (1849 \u2013 1921)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Slovak national awakener and collector of folk songs. In the town centre, Majzon Square is named after him and is adorned with his bust.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

J\u00e1n Thain (1885 \u2013 1953)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ethnographer, painter, collector and founder of the first museum in the town. He worked for 36 years at the Nov\u00e9 Z\u00e1mky grammar school as a drawing teacher.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Lajos Kass\u00e1k (1887 \u2013 1967)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Native of Nov\u00e9 Z\u00e1mky, an artist of European stature, leading figure of avant-garde art, publisher, editor, writer and revolutionary.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ernest Zmet\u00e1k (1919 \u2013 2004)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Native of Nov\u00e9 Z\u00e1mky, academic painter, donor and founder of the Art Gallery. He was one of the most important figures of Slovak visual art.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Lajos Luzsicza (1920 \u2013 2005)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Native of Nov\u00e9 Z\u00e1mky, local patriot, honorary citizen of the town, academic painter and writer. His paintings radiated a warm bond with his native land.<\/p>\n
