Statue of Cyril and Methodius

Description

The controversial bronze statuary of the missionaries of the faith was unveiled on 4 July 2010. It is the work of the academic sculptor Ladislav Berák from 1999. It is 3.9 metres high. The book held in Methodius’s hands is the “Proglas” in the Glagolitic alphabet – a poetic foreword to the gospel.

It is located on Kossuth Square. This place was not chosen by chance. It is meant to carry the symbolism of the cooperation of a united Europe, because it is located at the crossroads of the roads from Bratislava, Budapest, and Nové Zámky. Among Slovaks, it aroused enthusiasm and pride. For the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition is one of the fundamental pillars of the Slovak state. The brothers Cyril and Methodius stand proudly in Komárno to recall the rich Slovak history, which began already in the Great Moravian period and continues to this day.
