Mór Jókai, “the great storyteller”, was a famous Hungarian writer. The Komárno island played an important role in Jókai’s life. He grew up here from early childhood and liked to stop here even in the advanced years of his life, where in the company of Zsolt Beöthy he took part in the celebrations of the writers of the time who came here on visits from Pest.
After the death of Mór Jókai, Zsolt Beöthy had this memorial built for his 65th birthday in order to faithfully preserve the greatness and spirit of the writer. Unfortunately the statue can no longer be seen today, as it deteriorated in the period between the two world wars.
