Limes Gallery

Description

If at the end of Jókai Street we turn right and cross Kálmán Thaly Street, we reach Franciscan Street. It takes its name from the Franciscan order, which settled in the town in the 17th century. To the right, attention is drawn to the Baroque church. The church, which was originally built by the Dominicans, passed into the hands of the Reformed Church and later, in 1672, to the Franciscans, who rebuilt it in the Baroque style with a tower on the side facing the castle. Besides the church, they also built their monastery, which was extended in 1750. After the earthquake of 1763, the church was damaged. The church was restored in 1769, and from this period dates the tower, which can still be seen today. The members of the order, however, left the town at the beginning of the 19th century, and the building was used by the local military regiment, which used it as a garrison church, and for that reason the locals still call it the military church today. A military hospital, a food store, and officers’ quarters were also located here. The church was renovated in 1906 and served the army for religious rites until 1945. Later it was used as a storehouse. During the Second World War the monastery building was damaged. The military church, which was in poor condition, was restored in the 1990s.

In 1966, through the efforts of the Municipal National Committee in Komárno and the Regional Office of Monument Care and Nature Protection in Nitra, an archaeological survey and sounding of the walls were carried out. In 2001 the town leadership of Komárno entrusted the civic association Pro Arte Danubii with transforming the church into a place serving to present cultural values. The building was then renamed the Limes Gallery. Its mission is the presentation of contemporary domestic fine art. The institution’s mission is the preservation and presentation of universal Hungarian culture. All events in the gallery take place in a festive and dignified atmosphere.

The building is a national cultural monument.
