Calvary

Description

The Calvary was built in 1779 on the embankment of the Forgách bastion at the tip of the hexagonal fortification. It was established by parson Martin Predmerzsky. The complex contains twelve symmetrically placed chapels, a cross and statues created in the Neo-Baroque style. From the gate, built in 1923, stone steps lead all the way up to Golgotha. Behind it stand the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. In 2011 a memorial plaque dedicated to the captain of Nové Zámky, Count Adam Forgách, was unveiled at the entrance to the complex. The Calvary has been registered on the list of national cultural monuments since 1963.
