Church of St. Rosalia

Description

An interesting monument built in the Classicist style is the Church of St. Rosalia. Attention is drawn to its unusual form. The building was designed after the model of Roman rotundas. On the exterior, a rectangular presbytery adjoins the oval of the nave, which is vaulted with a lanterned dome. The church was built on the site of the old Church of St. Rosalia, which was demolished in the 1830s when it had to give way to the construction of the Palatine Line, part of the Komárno fortress system. With the money received, the town built a new church.

The new church was built in 1839-1844 together with a small calvary. It is built in the Empire style (the last period of Classicism), except for one altar preserved from the old church in Baroque style. The church was of great service in 1848-1849, after the destruction of St. Andrew’s Church by fire and the bombing of the Reformed Church in 1849. During that time it served both Reformed and Catholic believers until the renovation of St. Andrew’s Church. In the years 1860-1880, it was attended mainly by students and pupils. Then, in the years 1880-1906, it was used mainly by the military garrison, until the Franciscan church was converted into a military one. At that time it was discovered that the wooden structure of the church was rotten. Therefore it was closed and later, in 1908, renovated. From 1902, the church was lit by gas, and from 1935 by electricity.

The church was renovated again in 2011 and 2020.
