Former Manor of the Bottka Family

Description

Around 1880, today’s Mária Homestead was purchased by Dr. Gyula Szőke, a professor from Budapest, who had a smaller manor built here as his summer residence. The village and its surroundings were in general a popular summer retreat for various prominent figures, who acquired or built summer residences here and were in turn visited by other notable personalities. This place certainly has the charm of nature about it.

In 1929, Pavol Bottka and his wife Helena Esküdt bought the estate and manor from the Szőke family, and they extended it with terraces into its present form. The Bottka family originates from the village of Martinová, which today is part of Lúčnica nad Žitavou. However, the estate and manor were confiscated from them in 1932, and they were allowed to occupy only one room. In 1990, through restitution, they recovered both the building and the estate, and the family intends to restore the dilapidated building (which the State Farm completely neglected) and renovate it in a romantic style. It is a single-storey rectangular building with a tall hipped roof, to which annexes ending in balustraded terraces were added in 1929 on the narrower façades. One of the annexes has an upper floor, another is now roofed over. The simple façades of the building are articulated by rectangular windows; a cornice above the windows and a prominent plinth run around the perimeter of the old part of the manor. The entrance openings have portal reveals of pink marble.
