Description

György Széchényi (1605 – 1695)

The Archbishop of Esztergom issued a charter on 29 October 1691 by which he elevated Nové Zámky to the status of a town. A duplicate of the charter granting municipal privileges is kept at the town hall. On the Main Square stands his larger-than-life statue. The Franciscan monastery is adorned with a memorial plaque dedicated to György Széchényi.

Gergely Czuczor (1800 – 1866)

Benedictine monk, Hungarian poet and linguist. He was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and was born in the nearby village of Andovce.

Ján Majzon (1849 – 1921)

Slovak national awakener and collector of folk songs. In the town centre, Majzon Square is named after him and is adorned with his bust.

Ján Thain (1885 – 1953)

Ethnographer, painter, collector and founder of the first museum in the town. He worked for 36 years at the Nové Zámky grammar school as a drawing teacher.

Lajos Kassák (1887 – 1967)

Native of Nové Zámky, an artist of European stature, leading figure of avant-garde art, publisher, editor, writer and revolutionary.

Ernest Zmeták (1919 – 2004)

Native of Nové Zámky, academic painter, donor and founder of the Art Gallery. He was one of the most important figures of Slovak visual art.

Lajos Luzsicza (1920 – 2005)

Native of Nové Zámky, local patriot, honorary citizen of the town, academic painter and writer. His paintings radiated a warm bond with his native land.
