The Soviet Army war cemetery in Štúrovo on Sv. Štefana Street was established in 1946, and the remains of 5,247 fallen Red Army soldiers are buried here, either in individual graves or in mass graves. The cemetery is dominated by a statue – a monument of a grieving mother.
The war cemetery has undergone several reconstructions – in 1965, 1989-1994, and the most recent reconstruction was carried out in stages from 2007 to 2009.
The finishing works on the war cemetery were carried out during the holidays by students from Slovakia, Russia and Belarus. The largest financial support for the reconstruction was provided by the Russian Embassy.
The cemetery is listed as a cultural monument of Slovakia and is freely accessible to the public.
