The symbol of the fortress in its present familiar form was probably placed in the 18th century on the westernmost tip of the Madonna Bastion of the New Fortress. It is a copy, since over time it became so damaged that it had to be removed from there. The original of the statue is housed in the local Danube Museum. On that basis the sculptor Vladimír Višváder made an authentic copy of the Stone Maiden.
The maiden holds a laurel wreath in her hand, and beneath her an inscription is carved into the stone – indicating the impregnability of the fortress: NEC ARTE – NEC MARTE = neither by cunning nor by force.
The statue is said to depict a maiden who during the Turkish siege of the fortress decided to set fire to the Turkish camp. Thanks to her help, the imperial soldiers eventually managed to defend the fortress and drive the Turks out of Komárno.
