Water Tower

Description

From a historical perspective, the Komárno water supply was one of the oldest, after those in Bratislava and Trenčín. The tower water reservoir is the oldest of its kind in the territory of western Slovakia. It originally covered the water needs of the entire town of Komárno, as well as the village of Új Szőny (a district of Komárom, Hungary).

The plans were drawn up in May 1901 by Elemér Zarka, who was a royal engineer in Budapest. Construction of the water reservoir building itself commenced in 1901, and it was put into operation on 15 August 1902.

The tower is 28 metres high, and the total volume of its reservoir is 500 cubic metres.

At the beginning of the last century, the space near the tower was called Ráckert (Serbian Garden), and there was a football pitch of the 1. KFC Komárom team here.

Due to increased pressure conditions in the water pipes, however, it is no longer in operation, though it is still maintained in operational condition.

The building’s technical condition can be characterized as good; it is a brick masonry structure without static damage. Renovation of the exterior was carried out in 1973. Reconstruction of the technological equipment (replacement of damaged piping) was carried out in 1965-66.
