PAX INTRANTIBUS — peace to those who enter
This text stands above the entrance to the Franciscan church and monastery in Nové Zámky, which was built between 1626 and 1631 and consecrated by Péter Pázmány on 24 May 1631. The library once held important codices such as the Nové Zámky, Czech and Thewrewk codices.
After Nové Zámky fell into Turkish hands, the monastery served (from 1663) as quarters for Turkish officers, the church was used as a warehouse, and the church tower was converted into a minaret. When Nové Zámky returned to Hungarian hands, after 1685 the church and monastery were restored and consecrated by the Milanese Franciscan general Péter Sorman.
Comprehensive restoration and archaeological research of the monastery began in 1978. The archaeological excavations uncovered the original gate and the crypt beneath the church. Today the monastery partly serves as the exhibition space of the Municipal Local History Museum and partly as accommodation for the clergy of the Franciscan Order.
