Wooden Bell Tower

Description

Because the local Roman Catholic church was built without a tower, a wooden bell tower was erected nearby in the old cemetery in the 18th century. Today’s bell tower, which stands in front of the church, was built in 1926. Its lower section is of masonry while the upper section is constructed of planks, topped with a sheet-metal pyramidal roof with a cross. Two bronze bells now hang in the tower. One of the bells was a gift from the Roman Catholic faithful of Kravany nad Dunajom and was cast by the Fischer Brothers foundry in Trnava in 1920. The second bell was cast in 1928 by bellfounder Lőrinc Wellner during the ministry of parish priest Imre Ambrík, with János Szota contributing most of the donations. These bells replaced the old ones, which had been confiscated for war purposes (the casting of cannons) during the First World War (1914–1918).
