Church of the Virgin Mary

Description

A curiosity of the village of Kravany is the Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the 13th century in the late Romanesque style, around the year 1232.

During the Turkish wars and estate uprisings, the church fell into disrepair, and only around 1712 was it restored and adapted in Baroque style by Count Ferenc Gyulay, and in 1936 renovated according to its Baroque state. The church was originally dedicated to St. Lawrence, and only after the Baroque renovation was it dedicated to its present patron.

It is a single-nave manorial church without a tower; the southern façade, ending with a scalloped gable, was renovated in Baroque style and has stone door jambs on the main entrance portal. The semicircular apse is divided by narrow slit windows with widely splayed reveals ending in pointed arches. The apse is covered by a conch.

The Baroque main altar with pilastered wooden architecture and volute finials dates from the beginning of the 18th century. On the sides of the central oil painting of the Virgin Mary are sculptures of St. Joseph, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony, and St. John of Nepomuk. The altar was donated to the church after 1700 by monks from Esztergom.

The most precious monuments of the church are two tombstones of red marble. On one is the inscription: Hic est Sepultura nobilium de Lábathlan Anno Domini Milessimo quadringentesimo (Here is the resting place of the noble family of Lábatlan in the year of the Lord 1400).
