Chapel of St. Joseph

Description

The chapel and the adjoining hospice, which took in impoverished noblemen, were built in 1741 thanks to the bequest of Baron Adam Zichy. The Poor House later housed a printing works and then a bookshop.

The Chapel of St. Joseph, which has only a single nave, was the first burgher chapel in the town. The apartments of the Poor House could be occupied by five poor people, who could at the same time receive support from the foundation.

In 1904 the building was bought by Géza Spitzer, who set up in it the largest printing works and bookshop in the town. A bookshop still operates on the ground floor of the building today.

The richly decorated columns of the small chapel, the main altar, and the paintings faithfully reflect the Late Baroque period. Above the side entrance there is a relief with a cross and an inscription dating from 1808.
